RPC Science 5 Lesson 115

Hello! As a science lesson from Mr.Dignam on the photography semester of science.

Since we have not too much data left and we have to make it last for 4 or 3 days there will no pictures until next week sadly.

In these five lessons I learned how to change lighting on my phone since I’m pictures of my phone instead of buying an expensive camera.

In lesson 117 I had to take a picture of a object of something that moves and something moving fast. For my first picture I selected my tractors as my subject. Then I took the four wheeler to go to the stockers and took a picture of Gordon who was following me. Then we have a heifer named Great who also followed me around but instead of humbly walking she was running after me so she was a fast moving object. I think the stockers need to be moved so that’s probably why they are chasing me. I took a video but because of the data thing I can’t show it until next week. And dad just told me as he was walking by to get snack that he will need my help to move the stockers! What a coincidence!

That’s it hope you enjoyed!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 110

Hello! Today in science I learned about three main things:

  1. How to make a pinhole camera
  2. How to print images from a pinhole camera
  3. And how to make the mixture that lets you make the picture.

So first of all too make a pinhole camera you need a box that is the size of shoe box or smaller. Then by pinning a hole in the camera you create the pinhole part of the camera. Then you cut a half inch square on the opposite side of the pinhole and about an inch away from the pinhole you cut another half inch square and then you cover it with duct tape. On the opposite side of the second square you can but your piece of paper there. Then before you can use it you will need to make some sort of lid over the pinhole so you can let light in when you want. You can rather buy the mixture or create the mixture yourself with everyday house things. Youll first need.

  • 500ML’s of water
  • 10g’s of dried mint
  • 10g’s of baking soda
  • 2g vitamin C tablets
  • 5ml’s of lemon juice

Since you probably won’t understand the way I was going to explain how to mix it i’ll let you watch the video I watched. And in this video it will also show you how to print the pictures.

So that’s it hope you enjoyed!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 105

Hello! This week in science I started a new semester about photography!

The main thing I learned about this week is about the first photographs.

So the first way I learned was called the Daguerreotype that was created by Louis Daguerre who was a man who was born and lived in France his whole life. Here is how the Daguerreotype works! It creates a highly detailed image on a sheet of copper plated with a thin coat of silver. After the exposure to light, the plate was developed over hot mercury until an image appeared.

And during the same time a man from England named Henry Fox Talbot was inventing his own prototype called Talbot’s process. The main difference was the Daguerreotype is a direct photographic process without the capacity for duplication. The main differences are that calotypes are negatives that are later printed as positives on paper and that Daguerreotypes are negative images on mirrored surfaces that reflect a positive looking image. So I have to explain how Talbot’s process works so here’s how: The Talbot Process is an early photographic technique invented by Henry Fox Talbot  in the 1830s. In this technique, a sheet of paper coated with silver chloride was exposed to light in a camera obscura; those areas hit by light became dark in tone, yielding a negative image. Which is really cool to see! In one of the lesson videos a man named George Did the Talbot Process and the Daguerreotype and the Talbot process took longer to dry and for the image to appear. Here is a very old image of my grandpa when he was my age:

No this is not a Daguerreotype or Talbot Process type of picture. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the first digital pictures.

Here are some pictures I took recently most of them are from my vacation to Earlton I’ll have a post about that tomorrow.

That’s it!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 100

Hello! Here is what Mr.Dignam wants me to do today! Write a short essay on your Citizen Science project. Answer the following questions:

  1. What are scientists trying to learn from this project?
  2. What kind of data are scientists using?
  3. Where did they get the data from?

So Here’s my work:

Scientist are trying to learn from this project so that they can get people living on Mars. One of the many things they are trying to know is how much will it cost for one person to live a full life on Mars. How much oxygen will it take for a full lifetime on Mars same goes for water. Also since sand storms happen so often that they can last for months if it would be best if they lived high in the sky like on a inactive volcano or underground. They are also trying to discover if Mars was truly like Earth millions of years ago and they are trying to discover why the top side of Mars seems to be younger than the bottom. On a Ted Talk in one of my lessons the person talking thinks that the top half was full of water.

The Scientist get there data from NASA from using the rocks Nasa’s rovers recovers from space. They also Use information from astronauts passing by when there going to the moon or the International Space station. Also they get data from astronomers looking through there telescope’s. They also get a lot of their information from people like Elon Musk but I’m assuming his information only goes to his scientist he has hired.

I just thought of an idea! Maybe someday I could build what Mars would look like when people are living on it except i’ll make it in Minecraft! That’s it tell what you think about my idea in the comments please!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 95

Hello! Here is what Mr.Dignam wants me to do in science today! Assignment: Write a short article about the ISS or the Soyuz rocket and spacecraft. What problems did the spacecraft designers have to solve?

My Choice is the Soyuz rocket and spacecraft because the way it launches and lands is very interesting to me. So here is my assignment:

When The rocket launches there are the giant phone tower looking arms that along the rocket to wherever there launching it so for example the International Space Station. When the Soyuz is preparing to leave the ISS the ground team as I call them, finds a flat area that is uninhabited that is within 350 kilometers from the nearest town and the rocket launch site. The rescue team that goes pickup the rocket and the astronauts go in any condition from 5 feet of snow to a sand storm. I wonder if there’s any farm fields in that region. Imagine a farmers was ploughing his when the rocket landed in his field and because the rocket would shake the ground it ruined all his work in that field. I bet he wouldn’t be to happy.

That’s it!

RPC Science Lesson 90

Hello! Today in science I learned how to make water bottle rockets, and an air rocket.

I already knew how to do a certain type of rocket we call the pop bottle rocket It’s technically pretty similar to the rest except we put a egg on the top of an upside down bottle and use the air compressor to put pressure in the bottle once there is to much pressure in the bottle it launches itself into the air the egg normally goes higher because it has more weight but when we put water in the bottle it makes it go higher. We use a fence post holder to hold the bottle before it launches a fence post holder in our version is two pieces of plywood cut about two inches long and one more piece of plywood about 4 inches long then we screw two screws into the edge of the 4 inch piece and under it we put both two inches pieces so there is about an inch of space from the ground to the bottom of the center piece of plywood. Then we drill a half inch hole in the center of the top piece of plywood then we put the lid of the pop bottle in to the half inch hole then we put the air compressor under it. Next we put the egg on top of the bottle after that we start the air compressor and away you go! We only had one egg that did not break doing this because it somehow landed on the trampoline that is about 300 feet away from the shed where we normally launch the rocket. After we found it we threw it in the fire it blew up! That was when I had friend over last summer when I had just finished my first year of homeschool when there was no Coronavirus.

The difference between the water bottle rocket, pop bottle rocket, and Air rocket is very interesting. The air rocket uses string, a straw, a balloon, and some tape. You first attach one end of the string to a tree branch or something similar that is higher than launching point. Then you put the straw in the string next you tape the balloon to the straw then you blow up the balloon but don’t tie it. After that you let go of the balloon then there you have it!

The water bottle rocket uses some pipe, and a big pop bottle and at one end you but an air valve that is on the typical tire. Then you use some tape a few snap ties to the tube without tying them then you use the top part of the snap ties as a holder for your bottle to be held with. then use a bike dump or something close too it to pump air then once there’s enough pressure the snap ties will let go and your rockt has been launched!

That’s it! Maybe I could post a video of us doing pop bottle rocket sometime comment if you think we should!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 85

Hello! Today in science I learned how to make a model rocket although I just watched the video’s and did not make one I also learned that people spend more the 1 year orbiting earth at a time isn’t that crazy?!?!

I also learned that SpaceX’s goal is to get people on mars.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., t/a SpaceX, is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. Cool right! But I thought Elon Musk was part of Tesla? Did you now Tesla is making tractors now?!?!

Here is two of them:

If Tesla Made a Futurustic Self-Driving Tractor, It Would Probably Look Like the Valtra H202 – TechEBlog
Let's Imagine Tesla Expanded Into Motorcycles, Buses, And Tractors

To be completely honest these tractors look TERRIBLE. The cab is way to big for the size of tractor the engine frames look ugly and plus on some of the models they don’t even put actual tractor tires on them. And how in the world will farmers afford them!?!?! There soooo expensive. One of their 100 horsepower tractors cost as much as John Deere’s biggest tractor which is almost a million dollars and John Deere is pretty expensive already.

That’s it!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 80

Hello! Today Mr.Dignam wanted me to write about NASA’s space shuttle programs.

There have been many downfalls and wonder full things happen.

Like in 1986 the Challenger Space shuttle program went terribly wrong when one of the O rings in the full capsells let go witch cause gas to leak out which cause an explosion which killed all 7 astronauts on board.

In 2003 the Columbia space shuttle took flight giving 15 years of success after the Challenger incident when a piece of debris hit the left wing of the shuttle when taking of into space. They crew of 7 successfully made into orbit around earth. Then after a few orbits around Earth NASA decided to return the astronaut’s to earth thinking that the pieces of debris would not be a big deal. When entering the atmosphere of earth the astronauts noticed that the left side of the space shuttle was more hot then the right side. The space shuttle then exploded in Louisiana on its way back to the Kennedy launch pad the space shuttle then went on to crash the remaining parts into Louisiana.

I’m glad no more people were killed during the accident and I’d like to take this as a learning experience.

And thanks to our mistakes of the past we were able to learn from our mistakes and improve our equipement to go to space with.

That’s it!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 75

Hello! Today Mr.Dignam wanted me to write on this subject: Write a short article on one or two of the space pioneers.

John Young and Wernher Von Braun shall be the two space pioneers I shall talk about today!

Wernher Von Braun was a German–born American aerospace engineer and space architect. He was the leading figure in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany and a pioneer of rocket and space technology in the United States. Who made several rockets in Huntsville Alabama.

John Young was an American astronaut, naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer. He became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as Commander of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.

And that’s it hope you enjoyed!

Hello! This week in science I did some painting I painted a fall trees landscape and a Spruce tree but I’m not that good at painting as much as I am sketching but oh well atleast I did it. I learned about many famous drawings my favorite was the corn harvesting picture because I thought it was cool to see how they used to harvest corn in Europe. I really like the sketching part of science so far because it’s less complicated and I enjoy it more. Here is my most recent drawing. You will be able to find most of my sketches on Jonathan very cool art website for RPC students and plenty of different students post their drawings on there.
