Cover Crops

Howdy! Here is another french assignment I translated into english:

The origin of cover crops goes back a very long time to the time of the Egyptians, when they planted cover crops to prevent soil erosion and to keep water in the soil longer. Today, many farmers still use this practice for the same reasons.

Cover crops are a mixture of multiple plants such as sorghum, millet, sun hemp, soybeans, buckwheat, and many other plants. Here are some ideas for mixtures:

  1. Sorghum, millet, soybeans, buckwheat, sunflower, and flax.
  2. flax, sorghum, sun hemp, buckwheat, and sunflower.
  3. Tillage radish, vech, millet, sorghum, sunflower, and soybeans.

Last year Dad and I planted mix # 2 and cut it for forage. Here are some cover crop pictures and a little video of dad cutting the forage.

Sometimes you can use plants like corn and when it gets a foot or two tall, you can plant wheat in the middle of the rows. Another method of using cover crops is to plant a crop early in the year, and when that crop is a foot or two tall, you can plant wheat in it to give the soil better yield. As you can see in the picture below, the tractor is pacting the cover crops and planting the wheat or etc.

You can also graze animals in the covered plants. Our cows love to graze in our cover crop fields.

And that’s why you should also encourage local farmers to start using cover crops!

And that’s it!

RPC Science 5 Lesson 165

Hello! Today was my first five lessons of my last semester in grade five science. Lately I have been doing only math to get ahead and math does not require a blog post so I have not been to active lately.

Anyways in science today I wrote the starting of a script for a mini movie that I may turn into a series called Toy wars: the attack of the organising monster. I got this idea after taking some video of my 1/64 scale tractor exploding using one of Olivia’s toys. (Olivia’s blog: https://livylblog.wordpress.com/ ).

Anyways I will get one or two clips on at the end of the post.

I also learned that I have greatly underestimated the work scriptwriters do as I used to think they were just a bunch of kids my age that had nothing better to do so someone hires them to write a random story in return for some candy or a video game. But I was wrong script writers are grown adults that went to collage to learn this stuff and know that I’m doing it I respect them much more!

And here’s the video I promised

And that is it over and out!
